Local and International Spending

UnionPay cards are accepted at around 95% merchants in major cities and suburbs, including major department stores, hotels, and specialty shops.

In the first half of 2024, our team at Bulago tested purchases using the Android App (Digital Card) in Australia, China, UK and Malaysia. In Australia, our cards were accepted for payments in the following stores:

Woolworths, Coles, IGA, Chemist Warehouse, David Jones, Myer, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, EG Ampol Fuel, Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Hilton (food & beverages), Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), various restaurants, cafes and more..

From time to time, merchants change their surcharge fees and whether or not to accept certain cards.

Foreign Currency Conversion Rates

When using our cards overseas, the currency amount of that country plus any merchant fees, taxes and charges, is converted using the UnionPay currency conversion rate on the day. If the amount exceeds the AUD balance you have on the card, the transaction will be declined.

The rate applied on the day of the transaction will convert from the foreign currency (such as CNY, MYR, GBP) to the base currency of our cards which is AUD, and excludes any merchant fees.
